Mayor’s ex-aide wrongly won jobs: Public records can help shake things up that need to be shaken up in government. Records on Jacksonville bids, contracts and procedures fuel this story by Mary Kelli Palka of The Florida Times-Union about a computer consulting firm formed by Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton’s ex-chief of staff that reaped more than $350,000 in city contracts, even though the company wasn’t eligible to receive any business. The story says ProLogic Consulting Inc., formed by Scott Teagle, one of Peyton’s best friends, received various contracts despite failing to meet requirements for years in existence and for providing a financial audit or review. The company became the city’s highest paid technology consultant. However, since the newspaper broke the story, the head of the city’s technology department has resigned, another high-ranking tech official was fired and the city has launched its own investigation while ending the city’s business relationship with ProLogic.. Meanwhile, the state attorney says he will ask a grand jury to probe the arrangement as well. Here’s a follow-up story that provides some new revelations and summarizes the developments.
Records on radar:
Local law enforcement statistics, FBI uniform crime reports, medical examiner records: Brian Haas and Macollvie Jean-François of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel on how the killing of a Broward County sheriff’s deputy keeps the county on pace to have its highest homicide totals since 1990 …
