Qualification in question: Clients wonder if spa owner should be removing moles: Public records can be a huge aid in helping consumers check out those who offer them services. Professional licensing records, corporate records and code enforcement records are among the public resources George McGinn of the North Port News tapped for this story about the qualifications of a spa owner to practice medicine in Warm Mineral Springs. The story notes that Mira Matchin started a business in 2004 that she advertised as a wellness center, “offering professional medical consultations in (a) Web site and in Russian-language newspapers and TV.” The story says she lists herself as “Dr. Mira Matchin” on her business cards. Yet, the Florida Department of Health says she has no licenses to practice medicine in Florida. In addition, her claim to a Sarasota County court in 2005 that she was a licensed neurologist in New Jersey isn’t backed up by that state’s records. Her attorney says she isn’t practicing medicine. Meanwhile, former patients are complaining about the work she did in removing moles, and she's in hot water with Sarasota County officials regarding code enforcement violations. The public records handbook covers licensing files of medical professionals on Page 194, corporation records on Page 96 and code enforcement records on Page 87.
NASA paid $26.6 million to Columbia families: Jim Leusner of the Orlando Sentinel used a federal Freedom of Information Act request to break this story about NASA paying $26.6 million to the families of the seven astronauts who died on space Shuttle Columbia, a settlement kept secret for more than two years. The newspaper only receive seven pages of documents, but they revealed former FBI Director William Webster acted as a mediator and adviser in negotiating the out-of-court settlements, which officials say they are bound not to say much about because of privacy or other legal reasons. “The documents were released to the Sentinel last month after a reporter filed requests in 2005 and 2006. Stephen L. McConnell, NASA's principal FOIA officer, insisted the agency was not trying to delay the records release,” the story said.
